While residential home security has always held a place in society, the team here at Greenwood Security Systems located in Indiana are going to let everyone in on a little secret.

The new go-to way for top-of-the-line security involves access control. For those unfamiliar, access control systems are a form of security that is used to help decide who or what can view or use resources in a computing environment. Access control limits access to buildings, campuses, rooms and houses.

Looking at the different types of access control systems, three stand out from the crowd. The first form is Discretionary Access Control. This form means the owner is in charge of figuring out who he or she will let into their home.

Next up is mandatory access control. This means that anyone who has clearance or special access may enter. This type of access is most common with secret government access and the military.

Finally, we have role-based access control. This form is also known as non-discretionary access control. This form is based on a persons role. For example, everyone in an organization has some amount of access with those more important or critical to the final result having higher access than say a janitor.

This is all great, but what goes in to building access control systems? The first thing one needs to figure out is what form of access control they are looking for. Once that is identified, the next step is to look at how many doors need to be secure. Once you have identified what needs to be controlled, take it a step further. Look at the importance of each door as some may need to be tighter secured than others with people having different access for each.

Once all of the above is locked away, the next step is to determine what type of access works best for you. The most popular option is card access. This involves employees holding up an ID or card to a sensor which will allow access to a building.

Other building access control systems include stand-alone locks which can be unlocked by a keypad, card or combination of both. When it comes to control system installation, stand-alone locks can be installed and ready to go in near minutes.
Other forms include key switches which need a physical key to activate. Keypads are simple, but less secure as people can write down the entry code and share it with others. The final form is Biometric systems which involve finger prints or even retinal scans.

At the end of the day, there are a number of different forms of security one can potentially use. It could potentially get stressful with the variety of options, but people just have to take a deep breath and think it through. Just take everything step-by-step. Identify your problem then once that is done, look at the different options and identify which one works best for you in the long run.

Follow these simple steps, and you will have all your security needs met in a timely manner.
